The 'Word' on Music

by Mike Riggs

The more I read the Bible, the more I become aware of how much importance the Word of God places on music, and of how important music is to God’s people, the Kingdom of God, and even God Himself.

This page is dedicated to talking about the importance of music to God. Please visit often.

Word on Music

My wife, Denie, in her article on “Benefits of Music”, talks about Albert Einstein crediting his ability to reason and think through situations to playing the violin.

Research shows that playing music is the only thing that causes both sides of the brain to flow, or function together simultaneously, and the result is that the brain is formatted for orderly receiving, storing, and recalling information. Music increases aptitude and causes ones ability to reason to be enhanced. That’s why people who participate in music perform better when tested in math, science and other subjects or activities that require thought.

Not only do research studies show this, but we see this in our schools. I’ve had three guitar students in the past month whose parents have told me that their child’s grades had improved since they began playing guitar.

This is a Biblical principle. Psalm 49:4 says, “…I will open my dark saying upon the harp.” The RSV says, “…I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.”

What an awesome truth. God knew that music caused that type of brain activity in us. He created it to be so.

What is truly amazing is that when our riddle or “proverb” that we are meditating on to our music is about Him, our whole being is transformed into that very likeness of Him as we “open” our thoughts to the music…

This cannot be ended without stating what verse 1 says “…Hear this all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world…”

This would change education systems worldwide, but then, that’s for another discussion.

God bless you while you make music to Him.
