The Word on MusicPs. 118:14“…The Lord is my strength
and my song and is become my salvation.”
The writer said the Lord was his strength, the source of his stability in
life’s adversity, the reason he could stand.
Then the writer said the Lord was his song. The Hebrew word here is “zimrath”,
who’s root meaning is to strike or touch the strings. It carries the idea of
playing instrumental music to God. He
had acknowledged God as his source and made the decision to make music to
Him. But
this musician also knew that God’s life in him was the reason for his
song, and so he said the Lord “is my song.” Ha! Here the meaning of
“is” is important. He did not say “God is what my song is about.”
He said “God IS my song”.
Then he says the Lord had become his salvation.
After acknowledging God as his strength and singing and making music to
God, God had become his salvation. This
picture is played out so many times in the Old Testament…music to God
as well as about him. He as our source of strength brings about His
demonstration of Himself as Savior when we praise Him with song.
That’s because making music to Him accesses His presence, and when we
access His presence we access all that He is.
The word “salvation” here is the lower case Hebrew word Yeshuwah.
That is the name for Jesus when capitalized.
It means salvation, deliverance, health, welfare, victory, prosperity…
All these things are His nature…His virtue, a part of who He is. When we
access His presence and are exposed to Him. When we are exposed to Him we are
exposed to all that He is, so we are exposed to “yeshua”, salvation,
deliverence, healing, victory…
NEVER underestimate the impact of music in worship to Yeshua, Jesus.
That’s why David was called upon to play in Saul’s presence when Saul was
troubled by evil spirits. Exposure
to His presence is exposure to all that He is. Let us make Him our song! Mike Riggs |
