The Word on Music We are told to “sing unto the Lord”.
At least 46 times in Psalms alone David either tells us to, or says that he
will, sing unto the Lord. Psalm
30:4 says “Sing unto the Lord, you saints of His, and give thanks at the
remembrance of His holiness”. The word “sing” comes from a
Hebrew root, which literally means to “sweep or touch the strings”. We are
to make music to HIM. David sang unto Him in times of
need. He sang unto Him in times of
plenty. He sang to Him before
battle and he sang to Him after God’s victory.
He sang unto Him in times of trouble and he sang to Him when everything
seemed in order. In David’s life
ANY situation was a good situation to praise Jehovah…specifically to “make
music” to Him. And David was “a man after
God’s own heart.” God was
pleased with his life in so much as he sought after God. God is moved by music.
He dedicated so much of His Word to talk about music. Let us learn from the life of David and
make music unto the Lord. Whether
it’s an expression of joy with a major chord, the demonstration of darker
emotions with a minor chord, or the wondering and searching dissonance of a
seventh tone, we are to “sweep the strings” to Jehovah. Let any situation in our lives be
a good reason to praise the Lord. *********************************************************************** |
