Praise Him with stringed instruments and organs.  Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord.  Praise ye the Lord!

The Word on Music

In Colossians we find doctrine on music that need not be overlooked.

Colossians 3:16 says that we are to “…let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord.”

We are to speak to ourselves in psalms-praise songs done on stringed instruments; hymns-celebration songs; and spiritual songs-songs sang which effect the “spirit being”, as opposed to our carnal nature.

As a child I grew up with an awareness, in our church circles, of a sharp distinction between preaching and singing, usually with an accompanying animosity. Thank God He is changing that…we are living in a new wave of God’s presence, conveyed by intense worship music, which paves the way for ministry of the Word, or even acts as the vehicle for the ministry of the Word.

Thank God we are seeing a marriage of music and the teaching and preaching of the Word.

Is this not what God has intended all along? YES, IT IS!!!

We are to “teach” (impart doctrine) and “admonish” (“to put in mind, caution or gently reprove”) one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs.

Music: what a great tool God has given us to impart and reinforce His truth.
