The first half of the 250-page book is dedicated to the basic music theory that is the foundation for improvising – namely, chords and scales.  It is mapped out for you, step-by-step.  With the proper foundation, you will fully understand how to ad lib and make the music sound full and fun!

The second half of the manual shows you how to take that knowledge and apply it to the songs. Piano Improvisation is full of improvising techniques and variations that are described for you as well as shown on the music staff.

The songs given in the book are old gospel hymns: "Amazing Grace", "Sweet Hour of Prayer", "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", and "Just Closer Walk with Thee." These songs were chosen because they are common, and they represent different meters and styles that you will be able to transfer into other songs of your choice.
